Bio:
Noah Reyes lives and works in Atlanta, GA. Reyes is an artist taking steps in many different directions, resulting in an awkward dance between curating, writing, and artmaking. They work for Sandler Hudson Gallery, serve as a board member for Lostintheletters, and co-founded Eso Tilin Projects. Sometimes they write for ArtsATL, ART PAPERS, Burnaway, and IMPACT Magazine.
Artist Statement:
Through multicultural and multigenerational stories tied to land, spaces of labor, and family myths, Noah Reyes creates site-responsive sculptural installations and paintings. Reyes often blends art-making with their curatorial and writing practice, with each sphere influencing the other.
Their Mexican-American heritage and family’s story of migration from rural Mexico to the United States is the filter through which they create art. Reyes’ work attempts to interrogate where disparate elements meet, what remains, and what grows from these hybridized roots.
Using a visual language of 2x4 constructions, Reyes’ structures challenge the inherent architecture of a space. The structures are literally raised walls, but it is their permeability and ability to force areas to expand or contract that shapes how viewers move through the space and experience the work. Reyes’ work also presents an alternative to the invisible labor that 2x4 walls occupy, taking what is typically covered with sheetrock, mud, and paint and bringing it forth to reveal what lies beneath the surface.
